Blackout

Blackout

Inspired by the phrase “We are Memory” by American neurologist and memory researcher Daniel Shacter and the thesis that human identity is formed through memory, we explored the question of what happens to our identity when we have lost the ability to remember and how a loss of memory is reflected in the body. the piece works with video, since editing and montage techniques in filming function in a similar way to memory: we select the scenes that seem most important to us, reassemble what we have experienced, and retrospectively tell our own version of our story.

Through the video level, the dancer’s memory or identity was made visible, the memory gaps in the form of image fragments thrown into the room to the point of total dissolution at the end of the piece: The dancer swims in a flood of videoimmages – similar to an explosion of his brain – shaken by grim scraps of the memory of his identity.
